Focus Your Job Search on What Matters

Communicating Your Value Proposition

I recently read, Strategy Is Not about the Competition and couldn’t help but relate the article to managing a job search. Ken Favaro points out, “when strategy is about competitors, leaders lose focus on the unlimited opportunities to grow customer value.” This concept can also be applied to a job search. Job seekers can become too focused on who they’re competing with and miss out on communicating how they can add value to organizations. Yes, understanding competitors’ value propositions is important but it shouldn’t override the focus on meeting an organization’s needs. Job seekers can increase their competitiveness by consistently communicating how they can meet or exceed an organization’s needs. If you’re a job seeker, understand your competition but take charge of your career by communicating your value proposition.
